  • HUD grants to aid public housing upgrades
    The capital fund program directed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will steer nearly $12 million to public housing authorities in Western New York. HUD announced Friday the allocations some 84 housing agencies in New York state totaling $321.47 million. The Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority is to receive just under $8.5 million. Funding for other area public housing authorities: ? Niagara Falls, $1.24 million ? Lackawanna, $810,326 ? Lockport, $444,528 ? Olean, $423,476 ? Dunkirk, $238,467 ? Jamestown, $195,827 ? Batavia, $186, 395 ? Kenmore, $175, 418 HUD specifies that the money be used to build, renovate and/or modernize public housing in these communities...

  • Washington housing inventory tight
    The number of residential properties for sale in the Washington area in January was down more than 25 percent from a year ago, while the number of contracts signed to buy a house or condominium was up 4.6 percent, according to Metropolitan Regional Information Systems Inc., or MRIS. The listing service's monthly RealEstate Business Intelligence report indicates the shortage of supply will continue to put upward pressure on pricing.   • HUD awards $434K to Dayton fair housing groups
    The Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded more than $434,000 to Dayton organizations to further the city?s Welcome Dayton initiative, educational workshops and other programs meant to stop unfair and discriminatory housing practices. Part of $7.5 million in grants provided nationwide by the Fair Housing Assistance Program, funds will bolster five agencies in the region: ? Dayton Human Relations Council, which will help implement the Welcome Dayton plan that aims to make the city more immigrant friendly; ? Miami Valley Fair Housing Center, which plans to conduct workshops and training programs on fair housing and test for fair housing practices in on deaf and LGBT communities; ? Advocates for Basic Legal Equity and Legal Aid of Western Ohio, which will provide legal education and assistance related to fair housing for immigrants and refugees; and ? Wright State University Center for Urban and Public Affairs, which plans to coordinate efforts to break down segregation and stabilize minority neighborhoods through improved community policing operations...


  • Under review: JBG's Wal-Mart-anchored, Fort Totten project
    The JBG Cos. has filed its large-tract review application for the company's Wal-Mart-anchored development in the District's Fort Totten area. With what it calls "one cohesive approach" to design, the developer expects that Fort Totten Square "will energize the neighborhood and signal a new vitality at the property." That property, right now, is vacant. The project is expected to include 350 apartments, 130,000 square feet of retail and 775 parking spaces on 4.62 acres at 300-320 Riggs Road NE.   • Jim Abdo bails on Logan Circle apartment project
    Developer Jim Abdo's lawyer says Abdo has withdrawn the zoning application for his planned 70-unit building in the empty space between 14th and 15th streets on Rhode Island Avenue NW, Washington City Paper reports. Abdo's lawyer declined to give a reason for the reversal.


  • $26B bank settlement good news for Washington-area homeowners
    Under the settlement with Ally Financial Inc., Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co., billions of dollars in cash and loan write-downs will flow to distressed borrowers, to the signing states (all but Oklahoma) and the federal government. Locally, Maryland is projected to receive $960 million, Virginia $479 million, including a $69.7 million direct payment to the state, and D.C. $40 million, including a $4.6 million payment to the District.


  • Small developers may be excused from MoCo upgrades
    Montgomery County planners are seeking to shift the burden for some road upgrades to the county to help small construction projects move forward more quickly, The Gazette reports. The effort would alter the county?s Policy Area Mobility Review tests, which require builders to pay for improvements to nearby roads if planners determine that the roads cannot accommodate additional traffic.
